São Jorge, by Marco Martins, competes in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Festival

It is the return of a partnership: Martins and actor Nuno Lopes, in the role of an unemployed boxeur. In the main competition are Kusturica, Brizé, Diaz, Konchalovsky, Malick, Ozon or Wenders.

The program of the 73rd Venice International Film Festival (August 31 to September 10) has just been announced: São Jorge, by Marco Martins, was selected for the competition in the Orrizonti parallel section, which gives attention to the new currents of world cinema. According to information produced by Filmes do Tejo, the film – after “Alice”, another collaboration between the director and the actor Nuno Lopes – “is a look at the years of troika intervention in Portugal and the financial crisis that recently hit our country across Fiction with the documentary (making use of a vast cast of non-professional actors).” It focuses on the story of a boxeur, a long-term unemployed who takes a job at a company with difficult collections to pay his own debt. Marco Martins was in Venice in 2006, in the short film competition with One More Year Long, written in partnership with Tonino Guerra.
